  • What is a water softener, and how does it work?

A water softener is a piece of equipment that removes hard water minerals from your water supply. This includes calcium and magnesium. This is done using a process called ion exchange. In other words, the water softener replaces them with sodium or potassium ions.

  • What are the signs that I need a water softener?

You need a water softener if you have hard water. Signs of hard water include:

    • Limescale buildup
    • Soap scum
    • Dry skin
    • Dull hair
    • Water spots on dishes
    • Reduced efficiency of water-using appliances

If you notice these things, let us assess your water with a free, in-home test.

  • Is softened water safe to drink?

Yes, generally, softened water is safe for most people. However, if you are on a low-sodium diet, you may prefer a system that uses potassium. You can also install a bypass for drinking water.

  • How much maintenance does a water softener require?

Some maintenance is required. You must regularly check salt levels and refill the brine tank. Some occasional cleaning of the system is recommended, but most systems don’t require much upkeep.

  • Will a water softener reduce water pressure?

If a water softener is installed properly, it should not affect your water pressure significantly. However, if you have clogged resin beads or pipes, issues may occur.

  • How long does a water softener last?

If you follow the proper maintenance schedule, your water softener can last between 10 and 20 years. Regular service can extend its lifespan.

  • How much does a water softener cost?

The cost will vary by system, considering size and type. However, the general range is $500 to $3,000 including installation.

  • Can a water softener remove iron or other contaminants?

In some cases, the system may be able to remove iron, but separate filters may be necessary for high levels of iron. Water softeners are not made to remove other contaminants like chemicals or bacteria.

  • Can I install a water softener myself, or do I need a professional?

There are some systems that are good for doing it on your own. However, professional installation ensures the best performance and compliance with local plumbing codes.
